Watched an interesting documentary on America’s first serial killer, H.H. Holmes… pretty gruesome stuff. Not too long ago, I heard that the story of H.H.Holmes might be put into a movie. Honestly, after getting an idea of how he was and how he came to be, his story is practically begging to be told on the big screen. Think: late 19^th century medical student turned serial killer… who then builds a castle purposely designed to house his dark secrets… like I said, pretty gruesome stuff.

I am basically obsessed with BBC’s Sherlock, a mini series featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson on their adventures through London. This series, however, takes the classic literary characters and places them in modern day, along with modern technology, modern London, and modern mysteries. I so wish there were more episodes than three a season, but at least they are all very good!

It has been brought to the attention of many a haunter and/or Halloween enthusiast that our favorite series of childhood ghost stories has now undergone the “R” word… redesign. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a series that we have all grown up reading whether we read these tales to our friends over a campfire, in the library, or under the covers with a flashlight. With all the hype these books brought to our childhood, we always looked forward to getting the wits scared out of us from these books. However, as we all know, what really kept us coming back were not so much thestories, as it were the illustrations. Stephen Gammell’s drawings from this series gave the stories their true edge. Their abstract and disturbing imagery really sunk deep down into our psyches, and boy did they give us a few nightmares. Who could forget the stern look on "Harold"’s face as he hung form a think rob by a string, or the eyes of "The Thing," not to mention the spiders hatching in "The Red Spot", or the lifeless skull of the woman in “The Haunted House?” How about Addy Finch walking toward us with her cane, or even the simple blood dripping from the window in “Sounds?” All of these images, although gruesome were ones we remember from our childhood and are still ones we look to for spooky inspiration.

After hearing about the new look of the “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” series, I had to check it out at The Haunted Closet & Adventures in Poor Taste. I have to admit that I am really fond of the new drawings, they are incredibly charming, uniform, and still spooky. I have become a big fan of Helquist since I finished The Series of Unfortunate Events, where his work was outstanding.

But of course, they lack the intensity, wildness, and bizarreness that Gammell’s incredible work brought to our young lives. I do admire their beauty and style, but while looking at the compared drawings I can’t help but wonder if this ‘redesign’ was done to purposely make the drawings less scary…

I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I must say that it seems the intentions behind the change were indeed to keep things a little less disturbing for the future generation. If this is so, then I say if we could do, they can too! At the end of the day, I must say both versions have a beauty all their own, and at least they are both spooky. Although, as Haunters, we are a very nostalgic people... hopefully the future generation will still keep going back Scary Stories like we did, regardless. Hey, every kid's got to have their nightmares, right?

This year was a year like no other. While working on a stage production of Sherlock Holmes, two theatre festivals (one scene/short play from each), improv rehearsals and shows, and several film projects up in the air, I have been a very busy girl! However, I did not let these other passions of mine get in the way of my passion for Halloween and I still managed to throw the annual party, put together a costume, and decorate my new place. When it came to this year's costume, I had been wanting to dress up like Marie Antoinette since last year, after buying a white petticoat from a thrift store for my 2010 costume, The Crone from Sleepy Hollow. It was the only article to the costume that I had had until this summer when I did a little more shopping.

After visiting a few thrift stores, I found a white blouse that had some ruffles and a rather interesting collar that I felt could work, and a pair of shoes that had the perfect shape. I then visited the fabric store and bought lots of trim, and some fabric that luckily was on sale! Another vital item I scored big time on, was the corset, thank goodness for sales again, because I got mine for only 25 dollars (originally 60!). And last, but not least, some other important accessories to go along.

I used some Sarri fabric for the skirt (which I pinned over the petticoat) and added some trim to the slit in the center. For the shoes, I used some gold/yellow fabric to cover them and then decorated them with more trim and a really neat pendent I found in the bead section at the craft store. I honestly don't know how I managed to pull off the shoes, but they were decorated, none the less.

The blouse I bought from a thrift store was originally white so, of course I dyed it pink! I didn't mean to dye it that bright, but I feel it still looked pretty good with the whole costume. I took the sleeves in a little bit and added some lace cuffs to them. For the corset, I added lots of extra trim and a traditional 18th century design down the center.

After all that, it was time to tease my hair up, put my face on, and start pouring on the blood...

Halloween Movie Countdown: "The Prestige"

Another great film with an amazing plot twist to continue this year's Halloween Movie Countdown. The element of surprise gets a whole new meaning in this movie about two magicians in the ultimate rivalry.

Set in the late 1800's, the film focuses on one of the popular forms of entertainment at the time, magic... and the tricks that come with it. (Sorry for the pun.) One of the things I love about this Christopher Nolan work of genius, is how the story is actually told. Not only is the story itself so intricate and clever, but with the use of non-linear story-telling, you are kept at the edge of you seat.

The turn of the century style, mysterious plot twists, and overall direction keep you intrigued and curious while watching making this another great film to add on to our Halloween Movie Countdown.

Halloween Movie Countdown: "Shutter Island"

I have decided to save the Halloween Movie countdown for the last 13 days of Halloween (like ABC Family, I know...). This is purely due to the fact that I have been busy working on several theatre productions lately as well as some film projects and of course, Halloween! I thought it would be great to start this years countdown with one of my all-time favorites, Shutter Island.

To me, this film is a masterpiece. While directing the movie, Martin Scorsese made sure that all vital elements to a great production were there: plot, spectacle, character, theme, language, and music. Shutter Island explores arguably several themes, but the main one being presented in one simple question "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or die as a good man?"

Now, I don't want to give anything away because I am one of those people who never spoils the secrets of a great film in hopes that people will just watch it for themselves, but I will say this: it is the ultimate psych-thriller and it keeps you on the edge of your seat literally throughout the entire movie. Trust me it's definitely worth seeing and will probably require multiple viewings as most people feel mind-boggled after watching it for the first time... which Martin Scorsese would only have done to us intentionally. Hey, it takes place in a mental institution... we should feel crazy by the end of it, right?

Growing up in my household, from time to time my mother would tell my brother and I stories about when she was younger... and how she used to live in a house she and her siblings believed was haunted. There were many spooky little occurrences that finally made the family members realize that this was not just the wind, something was off.

Common incidents included hearing footsteps upstairs when no one else was home, hearing footsteps walking down the stairs, and-one of the spookiest things of all- hearing 'it' sit in an old wicker chair in the living room. As many know, when anyone sits in a wicker chair, there is a very specific sound, and imagine sitting in the couch next to this chair, when an invisible 'something' or 'someone' would sit down next to you when you are home alone.

This presence was not shy in front of guests either. One night, while the family was having people over, the front doorknob kept turning on its own. When one of my uncle's checked to see who it could be, of course he found no one, let alone anyone who could disappear fast enough. Another incident that took place the same evening with the guests still in the house was when the portrait above the mantel flew off the wall. Instead of falling straight down as if a hook had gotten loose, the large picture practically leaped off the wall and landed on the floor all the way across the room.

One of my mom's scariest experiences occurred after she came home from school one day. She went into the bathroom and when she went to open the door to get out, she couldn't open the door. Living with two older brothers, she assumed it was them playing a trick on her, even though she knew she was home alone, but suddenly she could see the doorknob twist and hear loud pounding from the other side of the door. At the very same time, she could hear the doorbell ringing over and over, and other pounding noises all throughout the house. As she put it, "the whole house was shaking." There was no one way her two brothers could be behind this because of all the noise coming from so many different directions. After it all ended, my mom got the courage to get up and check around the house. After finding nothing, she asked her neighbor who always worked in his office where he had a clear view of her front door, if he had seen anyone come to the house. He hadn't seen anyone go to the front door except her when she had come home from school.

One of the most terrifying things my mom ever told me about this "haunting" was her experience with an antique fox fur. My mom, like myself, loves antiques and has been collecting them for many years. She had had an old fox fur in her room when one night she heard the little fur make noise. According to her it made some weird little grunting noises and even moved a little. As I recall, she said she threw it out of her room and hid under the covers the rest of the night. The fur remained in the middle of the hallway for a few days until anyone had the courage to pick up and get rid of it.

My mom and other family members of that side of my family as well as family friends have had many bizarre ghostly/spiritual encounters. Makes me wonder if this sort of thing is somehow passed on, after all my great great grandma all the way down to my mom and her siblings have all had such interesting tales to tell. I promise to share even more of these encounters with you in more posts to come.

My latest short! I just finished this film last week for my film final. I am mostly happy with the way it came out. Of course there are a few things that did not work exactly as I wanted, but I think, on the whole, I accomplished a lot this time around. Special thanks to Britney Arcadio, my best friend, who originally came up with plot, and for starring in the movie. Thanks also to Brent Perkins for acting along side her, and thank you Marshall Murr for being a great production assistant. The Witch of Halloween

I took a walk in my old neighborhood recently, the one I grew up in. Now that I live closer to it, it's my new favorite place to take a walk and clear my head. One of the things I liked most about being there was that I realized I had many memories from past Halloweens. I mean, if you think about it, Halloween is the one night of the year when you really get to explore the neighborhood and see the most of it while trick 'r treating. On my walk I past a little house with a huge garden in the front yard with a rot iron gate surrounding it- this was one of those houses I had gone to on one of the Halloweens I had had there.

This particular Halloween, I was pretty little, probably about eight years old and I remember walking up to this house I had never been to before. It was a cute little house like the others, but the garden looked so wild and neat, especially because whoever lived here had put some beautiful green lights out, and plenty of candle light too. As I approached the house, an older woman came to greet me with a bowl of candy. She smiled at me and told me my costume was lovely. Something about this lady was very intriguing to me. I believe she was dressed up as a witch, which I admired as well, but I think I was just really inspired to see a grown-up have such an appreciation for Halloween.

I began to wonder if she really was a witch just because she was obviously really into this. And when I thought she could have been a witch I remember thinking that that was really cool and neat and interesting and not bad like what I had always read in fairy tales. This woman was nice and she had the whole Halloween thing down. She was having a little party with her friends in this garden where they were all eating and drinking and she invited my friends and I to come grab some snacks from their big table of goodies. The whole garden was so atmospheric and beautiful and of course the food was amazing too... I think this was my first experience that made me really fall in love with Halloween, because after all we can celebrate it even as grown-ups.

So today I decided that I would fully take advantage of April Fool's Day after coming up with an idea for a very good prank. I have never really done an amazing April Fools Day joke before but my friend and I knew that the idea we had for a prank had to be put into action. I thought it would be absolutely ridiculous if we created a fake Facebook profile for a guy that does not exist (and who happens to be the lamest person ever, and a mother's worst nightmare) and to say that I am "in a relationship" with him, just to see what happens. No one caught on. They all believed I was dating this complete weirdo. I finally spilled the beans... what fools.

Since his 137th birthday on Thursday, I've been thinking about The Great Houdini. Harry Houdini has always been inspiring to me, as he has been to many, so I decided to see if I could find an interesting documentary or video about him on YouTube to share and I found this episode of Dead Men's Tales:

Actually it did hurt. A lot. This week I had to have a root canal. It was probably the most horrific and excruciating experience of my life. Six shots of novocain couldn't even stop the pain, apparently the infection forming in my nerves was much worse than we had thought... and so began a horrible three hour procedure of getting those nerves out. I won't go into detail, but I figure since I have a bit of a spooky blog, I may as well write a blog post about something gruesome every once in a while, or at least this time. Anyway, thank goodness for loving parents and prescription drugs. In the words of Mischa Barton from the Sixth Sense, "I'm feeling much better now."

Sorry for posting that this episode was going to premiere on Friday when it had already aired the previous week, shows how behind I am on my Ghost Adventures! Here is the first part of the episode if you missed it. This episode ended up being an all-time favorite of mine- one, because there are a few funny moments (as always); two, they had to go to the town council in order to get permission to investigate, which makes them the first crew ; and last but not least... it's Salem. Need I say more?

I guess you could say I am a believer in reincarnation and I am always looking for interesting stories, cases, and documentaries on the subject. This documentary about reincarnation explores a particular case about a young scottish boy named Cameron who believes he has lived a previous life on the isle of Barra.

Sorry for not posting anything in FOREVER! I have been very busy taking care of my cat Trouble who recently had to have her spleen removed. Thankfully though, she has been getting better. However, I didn't get a chance to come up with a new years resolution, but I believe that no matter what it will be, I shall always try to create more blog posts with more interesting information, media, and art.
